Menjana Pendapatan Persatuan Bersama Kopi Barli Bakar dan Nano Water Can

Assalamualaikum,

NANO CAN

Kejohanan Catur Tertutup Kelantan 2011

Assalamualaikum...

Wassalam...

Penentuan National Master 2010 : Mampukah Nik Farouqi Mencipta Sejarah Buat Kelantan?

Nik Farouqi Nik Abdul Aziz akan berentap dengan Tan Khai Boon dari Pulau Pinang bagi merebut gelaran National Master edisi 2010 esok.

Nik Ahmad Farouqi

Tan Khai Boon

Mampukah Nik Farouqi mencipta kejutan? Kita tunggu saja esok....

Debaran Dua Kejohanan Utama: Pemain Kelantan Berbekalkan Semangat Juang!

Namun, seperti tahun lepas, Kelantan tetap mampu mencuri tumpuan. Bagaimana pula tahun ini? Mampukah Laila Husna Sahadi meneruskan kecemerlangan seperti tahun lalu?

Itulah uniknya Kelantan: Pemainnya sukar diramal.

Syed Azizi Abdul Rahman : From Zero to HERO

He was informed just around 2 weeks before the tourney, nearly cancelled his participation due to health concern but Syed Azizi later defied all odds to win the Kelantan Closed 2010 today in a very convincing way. He won all his games against few notable players. His most outstanding win was against FIDE rated player, Nik Ahmad Farouqi who finished second. His other victim also include Mohd Azizul Mat Daud, Bakri Jusoh and Wan Tarmizi Wan Sulaiman.

Before this tourney, I bet most of you hardly know Syed Azizi well except me..:). Syed Azizi has been my chess friend on and off the board for the past 7 years. He started playing chess since in secondary school representing MSSD Tumpat then. He also represent UiTM Kelantan in inter-UiTM tourney in 2001. Like most Kelantan based players, his tourney exposure was limited within local chess tourney. His only rated tourney was AMBank Challenge 2007, recorded 5.5 points from 11 rounds.

I am more than happy to write about him as much as Bakri Jusoh. I find this two players very inspiring and unique. Despite their lack of tournament exposure, their playing skill can be considered at par with most of active rated player. But what i really respect about these two guys is their humility and manners which some of the talented players lack.

Congratulation to Syed Azizi. We hope you can sustain your excellent form in NC2010. Full result of the tourney can be viewed at Caturkelate and Chessresult.com

Pics will be uploaded later.

Who Will Win The FIDE Chess Championship 2010?

I think it still not to late to write about this tourney. I am not going to comment on games as I am not up for it...:) However, I still want to feel the heat by writing and following this event with my own way...:) so, let me start with a simple question: Who will win it? Simple, just vote on the poll on your top right. No prize will be given .. just a pat on the winner's back maybe..:)

My choice shall be non other than Vishy Anand. Why? Simply because I like his playing style and I love his humble and easy going attitude (based on what I saw from interviews and articles I read)

Your guys can follow the tourney from the official websites

Afiq Darwish: Another GM in the Making...?

"Melentur buluh biar dari rebung" is a famous Malay Proverb. Simply said, if you want to train someone, start since they were kids as they are usually easy to be trained. I think this proverb fits chess education and training very well. If we want to produce GM, we have to start looking at young kids. Take Yeoh li Tian for example, he's been trained since he was 5 years old (maybe even earlier..) and look at his achievement now...

Polgar Sisters have been exposed in the training program since they were very young. According to the father, Mr. Polgar, Chess genius can be trained.

During SMCH Open recently, I met our own Mas Hafizul, Malaysia's Top player with his "GM" Afiq Darwish, 6 months...:) Could Afiq be our next GM? maybe.....:)

Afiq Darwish's first step to chess...:)

PCNK Sponsors Committee Gathered at Emirates Kopitiam

Last night a small gathering among Sponsors Committee for Kelantan Chess Association was held at Emirates Kopitiam. The gathering's main objective was to discuss on chess activities which will be organised under PCNK once the incorporation is finalised. An Official blog of PCNK will be on web very-very soon...

Brief on PCNK's Sponsor Committee

The efforts was actually a continuation to the previous efforts by various parties to reactivate the PCNK. However, due to several problems, previous attempts were not materialised. In February 2010, A team of committed Sponsors led by En. Wan Ismail agreed to make another move to realize PCNK. Among other sponsors include Nasrul Humaimi, Nik Ahmad Farouqi, Nik Zaharuddin, Mohd Azizul, En. Nadzri Hamzah, Cikgu Saufi, Cikgu Nik Azrihan and myself.

We had organised several meetings before and currently the application for reactivation of PCNK is already at final phase and being processed by the Sport Commission of Malaysia. Hopefully, it will be approved soon.

Among important and coming soon activity is the selection tourney for National Closed 2010. Tentatively, the selection will be held on 14-15 May 2010. The selection is opened for Kelantan Based players only.  The detail of the event will be posted on the new PCNK Blog soon...:)

After the brief discussion, we had "friendly blitz" seesions.

Nik Nazri Nik Hassan Won SMACH Open 2010

Muhammad Arshad, The busiest man of the day!

Nik Nazri Nik Hassan emerged as an unexpected winner to win SMACH Open 2010 yesterday. Nazri outplayed several big names such as Nik Ahmad Farouqi, Mohd Azizul and Fantastic Four from Terengganu ie  Norazmi Mohd Nor, Ruzenan Bakar, Suhaidi Mustafa and Fairul Yusof.

 The Champ!

Bakri Jusoh was quite off-form yesterday, finished 11th placing with 4 points. Yours Truly wasted two winning positions due to weak endgame technique. I lost to better players ie Mohd Noor Al-Maarif (9th place) and Suhaidi Mustafa (7th Place).

Yours Truly vs Suhaidi

Baharuddin Hamzah returned into the local scene and managed to grab the 6th place. Nik Ahmad Farouqi was one of his famous victim. My sparring partner, Ariez who gained valuable experience in KL managed to secure 10th place with 4 points.

Azizul in  Action

Nik Farouqi vs Baharuddin

U18 section

Rahim Ramli

My chess students also performed above expectations in U12 section: Afham (4.5 pts), Naim and Ahmad Syairazi (4 pts), Amirul was a bit unlucky with only 3 pts. Unfortunately, only four winners available for U18 and U12 sections

KL Open 2010 : Yeoh Li Tian Could Be Our "Carlsen"!

I am really inspired by this young and talented kid and I could not resist to write about him. I had a match against him in AMBank Challenge 2007 (which of course I lost). Yeoh Li Tian's performance in the last KL Open was impressive. Only 2 losses from 9 rounds and RP of 2314 was something very worth to be proud of.

Many blogs has touted him as our best hope for First Grandmaster and I couldn't agree more. He's young and extremely talented. with proper guidance he shall be our own GM Magnus Carlsen..:) Li Tian's Performance in KL Open 2010 - HERE

Farouqi & Haq : Two Kelantan Players at KL Open 2010

Farouqi started very well by drawing his first round against GM Bui Vinh. However, lack of experience or maybe fitness hampered Farouqi from performing better. However, he should give a pat on his back for the effort and commitment for this tourney. Nik's performance in KL Open 2010 - HERE

Abdul Haq may not have an outstanding performance to shout about but he has every reason to be proud as he is the only player who managed to snatch a draw against GM Nigel Short in the Simul event. That is impressive. Abdul Haq is one of Kelantan's most gifted chess players so far. However, his commitment in study and work hindered him to unleash his "Hulk" in chess. Later maybe...:). Haq's performance - HERE

I also want to congratulate all malaysian players for their efforts and determination.

Win With Pride... Lose with Dignity...

GM Luther Thomas : Special GM From Germany

Nik Ahmad Farouqi who is currently participating in KL Open 2010 called me this evening to share with me about GM Luther Thomas (Elo 2559). What is so special about him? He is not the highest rated player, He may not as popular as "Malaysianchessaffairs" or even Stonemaster in Malaysia..

Well what is so special about this 41 years old GM from Germany? - He is Physically Challenged / OKU!

Well, most would say chess is not a physical game afterall so why bother? Hmm.. it could be true.. but we are actually inspired by the spirit and determination by GM Luther Thomas in dealing with his physical abnormalities, capitalizing his strength rather than mourning about his disability.

I wish established bloggers like Hairulov, Gillachess, GiloCatur, SIFU or even our new hot and spicy Malaysianchessaffairs should interview him.. His story may inspire us to become a better chess player and a better person too...:)

P/S: Good luck also to Abdul Haq - another Kelantan based player in KL Open 2010

Pre Arranged Match : Why It Is Considered as a Cheat?

My first article on Prearranged draw has led to various response.. Most of them disagree with my article. Well.. up to them as this is my opinion. I would like to thank IM Jimmy Liew for his complementary analysis on Badbishops vs Malaysian Chess Affairs - Jimmy's Analysis.

One of Jimmy's comment that attracts me is "One thing is for sure, Rationality uses logic in his arguments (well his name is rationality after all) and not resorting to emotional rants."...:) - logic?? not resorting to emotional rants? hehehe... Jimmy.. Jimmy...

Well, Rationality (Really?) has thrown a baseless accusation that I have edited my post which I DID NOT.. Where is his evidence? he should save the original screen and make comparison before accusing me like that.... This accusation actually confirms one thing which somebody (my chess friend) has told me earlier...:) Ironically, according to Jimmy - The Analyst, this is very logic and rational.

Well, I do not wish to further dragged into this debate..If you believe that pre arranged draw is not a cheat for whateva reasons you think fits then be it... but simply accusing someone edited the post to defend yourself is a very low effort... well what to expect from a blogger who has no balls to identify himself... :)
 ,
To end this debate on wheter Pre Arranged Draw is a cheat or not, here are my opinions...:-

1. When pre arranged match lead to directly / indirectly DENYING / AFFECTING other player chances from winning or securing certain post or prize then it is unethical...

2. Fatigue or money reason can't justify to fix a match... how about the other players that possibly affected by the decision? Is it right? If you think you are unfit to finish all rounds or have no money to compete.. dont compete at all....or just resign...

I left you with an anology... Smoking is bad for you and other people's health ... many people smoke does not make smoking is good... eventhough you might say that you buy cigarette with your own money does not make smoking is good also...if you say you smoke because it makes you feel macho or handsome also does not change the fact that smoking is bad for health....:)

Conclusion

Regardless my opinion on Pre arranged draw, i believe that it will remain status quo... it's a matter of personal integrity and preferences... I personally have agreed to draw with a friend to secure a top 5 place in a chess tourney before.. but I will never say pre arranged match is good as it actually affects other players' chances unfairly..... For those who do not agree.. then.. be it... it's your choice...:)

To Jimmy Liew :

I humbly declined your advice...:)

My prediction after this post: Badbishops: 0 vs Rationality: 2 ( how about pre arranged draw?:))

Food For Thought For "Malaysianchessaffairs"

I don't know how to react to this NEW BLOG... Malaysian Chess Affairs... I really want to laugh out loud reading one of his post (response to my previous posting on Pre Arranged Draw...). Well.. He claim he is a Malaysian chess player with considerable strength and experience (yeah.. yeah.. yeah..)

Reading his POST made me wonder if he suffer from brain damage or acute comprehensive disability... as I noticed that he actually did not check his facts before posting the post. Here are my simple and clear rebuttals on his blunders:

Blunder 1 : "Norazlin Juarih, went so far to call the idea of prearranging a game cheating."

My Answer: Prearranged draw is considered a form of cheat according to wikipedia., I just commenting on that lah ...so.. your definition that  is not a cheat is based on what? If you have problem with the definition.. sue Wikipedia lah...:) Refer WIKIPEDIA

Blunder 2: "He goes on to whine that he was once a victim of such 'cheating', how he would have gotten a better placing if the game ended decisively."

My Answer: It was not me who went whining as a victim of such cheating... can you prove it? which line in my POST indicated that I once a victim of this cheating? Maybe you have brain damage. that you are unable to read things properly and suffers from delusional.. pity you...:). After all, the blogger who claimed he was cheated not me la.... other person la... go figure.....:)

Blunder 3 : "I found that you condemned Norazman in the Titiwangsa event, and then went on to urge others to read Norazman's side of the story. Make up your mind. Hypocrite."

My Answer: I think you better learn to read and understand English.. Actually, in my ARTICLE my criticism was more towards the organizer instead of Azman himself....:)

My Advice To This BLOGGER

1. You maybe a strong player but seriously you just show how low you are....

2. Pre arranged draw / pre arranged match in any sports is a cheat no matter how you try to justify it.. The end does not justify the mean....

3. Please check your facts before criticizing others...

4. Take a break from chess.. as your brain is badly damaged by it.....:)

P/S: I know who you are...:)

The Greatest Cheat In Chess : Pre-Arranged Draw!

Too many arguments on cheating in chess recently.. I can't help but writing on this issue also. Well, to be objective, let's look at what Wikipedia says on definition of "Cheating in Chess".

"Cheating in chess refers to rule breaking or other unethical behaviours that are intended to give an unfair advantage to a player or team. Cheating can occur in many forms[1] and can take place before, during, or possibly even after a game. Commonly cited instances of cheating include: collusion with spectators or other players linking to remote computers, rating manipulation, misuse of the Touch-move rule, the pre-arranged draw, and the use of psychological tactics to unsettle an opponent. Many suspiciously-motivated practices are not comprehensively covered by the rules of chess and so, on ethical or 'moral conduct' grounds only, may be judged by some as acceptable and by others, as cheating." - Wikipedia

Forget other form of cheats which I think is not so material to comment, Let's focus on the most used cheat in chess tournament but yet it is still accepted as normal... - PRE ARRANGED DRAW!!
I bet most of us have heard or involved in this pre arranged draw during the tournament. It usually involves top players who use this cheat to secure cash prize or help his/her buddies to win some (if he or she already secured a place).

It is also used to deny another player from winning a prize... this is a clear cut cheat but still widely practised and accepted among chess players... maybe the difficulty in proving such arrangement the stumbling block in countering this cheat...

Win With Pride... Lose With Dignity.....

Fair Play Please...

I recently joined Catur Terbuka WP 2010 held at Stadium Titiwangsa, KL. Well, first my intention was to join the OKU Chess category. However, as one of chess friends (OKU also) did not manage to find a team, I voluntarily offered my spot to him. And luckily, he managed to grab some cash prize. I was lucky also since the organizer allocated "Blogger Category". My perforamance is below par as I only managed to record 3 points out of 6 rounds.

But, this article is not about my personal performace which is nothing to shout about. I can't help myself writing about one of the most controversial situations (I think la) ever happened in local tournament where the winner is disqualified due to rating dispute or (maybe his deceptive act, which i am not in the position to comment...).

Well, I present to you readers to read and judge for youself from this two blogs (MySIFU) and (Rizal's Blog).

I do believe this controversy can be avoided should the organizer refrain the particular player from participating in the tournament. (Afterall he is a well-known player which is the familiar face in the local chess, and I do believe that many of us know that he is a FIDE Rated player).

And to the player himself, please join the tournament that suit your playing strength to avoid unneccessary complaints in the future..... and if the claim on the dirty tricks are true.... please grown up...Fair Play Please....

Food For Thought to IM Jimmy Liew...

IM Jimmy Liew is one of Malaysia's top players. If you say you are a chess fan in Malaysia, you have to know IM Jimmy.. at least have heard his name... I have seen him (from about 70-80 metres distance) and yes I respect his enthusiasm for chess which seems not fading..

I even put his blog on my bloglist as I enjoy his provocative style of writing. Maybe his a great attacking player as well...:) However, reading one of its latest post on Malay-Based Tourney really dissapoint me..  It's not because I am Malay (I have chinese blood also okay...) but I strongly feel such statement like "Maybe this is ala the NEP (National Economic Policy) rationale,  we need NEP because the Malays are unable to compete against other races. I feel like throwing up now, so I'll just stop writing here." should not come from someone of his calibre.

Who's actually being racist here? Who gives IM Jimmy rights to make such a generalize statement based on racial profile?

Afterall, What is wrong having Malay-Closed or Chinese Closed or Indian-Closed Tourney? We are all multiracial what? so just appreciate it lah!... It's just like we have state-based association lah!, Perak Chess Association, Kedah, Selangor.. so if this Association want to organize state-based closed tournament why we should get offended? Can we say.. "Maybe that particular state is unable to compete with other states??" Can we?

Afterall, does Kelab Catur Jaffolea ask IM Jimmy to sponsor the tourney? If it does than IM Jimmy has right to protest but still he cant related it to such a degrading statement... What a shame!

I do respect other religion, races and I dont mind if you guys want to organize tournament based on your races, religions or your specific groups.... afterall why should I? We are a democratic country kan....

Garis Panduan Pemilihan Dari MCF

Good Player vs Good Coach

I am interested reading one of IM Jeremy Silman's articles (respond to a chess fan) about becoming a chess coach especially for beginners (usually primary school students). Many of us would think that you have to know everything to become a good coach. Is that true? Maybe.. but maybe not.

Being a good player needs skills. Being a good coach also needs skills. If one has both skills, then he / she would be the perfect choice. But there are very few of us blessed with both skills. Do you know, that average rating of chess coach for kids worldwide is around 1400-1700? Even the great Kasparov (The highest rated player till now) was coached by lower rated player?

Teaching chess to kids requires different set of skills. Which are more important than your personal rating as follows:

1. You need PATIENCE to teach young children. Patience is important as you can't rush into making them as good as you in just few sessions. You have to set your pace according to your pupils.

2. Are you a NATURAL BORN TEACHER? Meaning to say, you are able to communicate in a simple, clear and entertaining fashion?

3. You must have a likeable attitude to make children feel comfortable with you which leads to better acceptance.

4. Finally you MUST HAVE PASSION for teaching. Will you dare to teach even for a very low fee? What drives you? Money or the sucess of your students?

P/S : Even IM Jeremy Silman attended class conducted by a 1500 rating teacher...:)

Chess As Subject In Our Education System

Chess is an underrated sport in Malaysia. Sound hard isn't it? But that is the fact. Unlike football, badminton, golf, hockey and other main sports, chess is just a "fit in" in Malaysia. To make it worse, many non-chess community still consider chess as a simple board game like checkers and not a sport.

To them sport should (or should i say must) involve physical movement, sweating and visible tense. Why this happen? simply because they dont understand chess. They never appreciate that competitive chess is as tiring as football or badminton competition per say...
Efforts should be garnered to make public awareness on chess. The benefit of chess and its commercial value. I am interested mith IM Jimmy Liew articles on Malaysian Chess Future (HERE) . To watch Vietnam and China surpassesed us is something frustrating. What went wrong? Who should take the responsibility? Well of course MCF is the answer. simply because MCF has the access and opportunity to promote chess in Malaysia.

Have MCF met with Ministry of Education to promote chess as one of the recommended sports for students? I don't know. If the meeting has been conducted, good then. However, if MCF never organise such meeting, they should consider one. Education system is actually the best place to scout for great talents as there is our young generation gathered. Gazzetting chess as one of the subjects tought in schools will surely benefit students and the chess community as well.

Chess is clinically proven as one of the best mind sport to improve our brain function. No one can deny the good things chess can contribute to health. Tonnes of research prove that chess also have medical benefit in fighting mental disorders like Alzheimer's and improve one's analytical ability. That is maybe one of the reasons why developed countries like Russia, China, USA, England etc take chess more seriously. put all this findings in a presentable working paper, arrange a meeting and make our point.

It is a tough work. Yes, it is easier said than done. But we have no choice. We have to make it happen. Maybe a blogger like me can just post bunches of ideas and maybe not all are workable. But great success usually come from simple ideas.. listening to these ideas won't lose you a single cent...

Cadangan Mewujudkan Sistem Pemilihan Telus

Konsistensi Pemain Perlu Diutamakan

Sistem Purata Mata Terkumpul (Weighted Average Accumulated Points)

Pemain A
Jumlah Mata = 20
Jumlah Kejohanan WAAP Yang Disertai = 2
WAAP = (20 x 2)/6 = 6.6

Pemain B
Jumlah Mata = 15
Jumlah Kejohanan (WAAP) Yang Disertai = 6
WAAP = (15 x 6)/6 = 15

Nah, walaupun pemain A menjadi juara dua Kejohanan, tetapi Pemain B lebih konsisten kerana menyertai kesemua kejohanan kompetitif.

3. Pengiraan perlu mengambil kira kejohanan terkini sekiranya ada dispute mata
4. Kriteria keseluruhan, Contoh:

1. Tgk FIDE Rating dulu
2. Tgk National Rating
3. baru Tgk WAAP

P/S: jangan pilih berdasarkan rupa sudah.....:)

P/S: Kalau ada National Rating 1400 (bawah 1600), tapi ada FIDE Rating adakah dikira Amatur???

Sepatutnya Amatur = NR bawah 1600 DAN TIADA FIDE RATING.. sebab kalau ada FIDE Rating maknanya bukan amatur lah... sebab FIDE Rating lagi kuat dari National Rating... jangan keliru...:)
